Fiction Recommendations by Genre

(Click on the genre descriptions below to see lists of recommended authors)

Adventure: Fast-paced, action-packed stories featuring larger-than-life characters, impossible missions, and cinematic atmosphere.

Fantasy: From pseudo-Medieval knights and dragons to modern urban elves and wizards, stories often based on familiar legends and feature magic and mythical beings.

Historical Fiction: Brings history to life with richly detailed insights into events, people, and cultures from the past.

Horror: With suspense and fear, nightmares come to life with grisly descriptions, monsters and demons, or psychological terrors, and may feature graphic violence.

Literary Fiction: Thought-provoking stories with challenging topics and complex plotting; often feature interesting or experimental writing styles.

Mystery: Witty and gritty hard-boiled detectives or eccentric amateur sleuths? "Cozy" or "noir"? Who doesn't love a good mystery?

Romance: Love stories with first kisses, twists, and bumps - but always a happy ending.

Science Fiction: Speculative fiction with science driving the stories. Intellectually and philosophically challenging, may take place in future or in other worlds.

Thrillers & Suspense: Cinematic action stories with building tension and danger at every twist and turn. Can you say "page-turners"?

True Crime: Investigate in detail the actions and motivations of real-life investigators, famous crimes, and infamous criminals.

Westerns: Exploits of cowboys, Indians, gunslingers, and lawmen in the wild Western US.

Women's Fiction: These character-driven stories are written by women and are for women, featuring female protagonists and emphasizing the importance of relationships.
